La Pata Sola: On Colombian Myths and Legends

Legend has it that over the jungles of the Colombian mountains, crashing here and there into the thickets, roams the Patasola. A foe of men, haunted by an ancient guilt, possessed by the horror of her own appearance, she never stops in her whirlwind of hatred and terror.

Her misfortune originates from a love affair, for during her life, she was a beautiful peasant woman married to a hardworking man dedicated to tilling the land. He held a strong suspicion that his wife was unfaithful to him when he went to the village to sell his goods…

Tired of his uncertainty, one night he left for the village as he had done many times before, but in reality, he hid near his house to observe more closely what happened in his absence. Precisely shortly after leaving his house, from behind some bushes that surrounded the home, he saw his village patron arrive, dressed smartly from head to toe. He knocked on the door, and the peasant woman greeted him with a passionate kiss, inviting him inside. Blinded by rage and jealousy, the peasant, upon seeing the deception, fetched his machete and burst into the room, finding his patron and his wife naked, lying on the bed. Without giving time for anything, he attacked the patron with machete blows until he killed him, then he grabbed his wife and struck her so hard in the hip that he cut off her leg with a single blow! Desperate, she hopped away on the remaining leg, disappearing into the thick of the forest, bleeding to death along the way. Meanwhile, back at his home, the peasant took his own life due to the indelible pain he felt in his heart.

The soul of the peasant woman remained trapped in the world of mortals, becoming a being full of hatred, rage, and bitterness, seeking out unfaithful men and those who get lost in the jungle at night…

They say she transforms into an incredibly beautiful, sensual, and enchanting woman. First, she bewitches and invites them to spend time with her, leading them deep into the forest, far into the thickness where no one can hear their screams. Then she morphs into a beast with sharp teeth, a gaunt figure, and tangled hair, consuming her victim without leaving a trace of their existence.
