We can all relate to the rebellious, hippie-inspired process of tie-dye, with its unique blend of colors and shapes depending on the dye and the method used.
To achieve a well-executed shibori (tie-dye) process, we must start by selecting a suitable base garment, ideally made of at least 60% cotton or 100% cotton, and pre-washed to ensure better results. With so many pigments to choose from, including natural dyes from plants or those available in the market, some of which require cold application while others require heat, the outcome depends on the material and the method used. When the dye comes in contact with the fabric, it plays with every pore, tinting according to its flow, leaving patterns behind. These patterns may vary depending on whether the garment is damp or dry. If the fabric is dry during the pigmenting process, the dye will only enter the fibers that come into direct contact with it, creating a harsh and defined outline. However, if the garment is soaked in water prior to coloring, the pigment will easily spread through the fibers, creating a gradient effect!
This is an easy and fantastic way to add color to your plain white shirts and create personalized styles that change with your mood.
